Dr. Howard-Yana Shapiro

Dr. Howard-Yana Shapiro has been involved with sustainable agricultural and agroforestry systems, plant breeding, molecular biology and genetics for over 40 years. He has worked with indigenous communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), governmental agencies and the private sector around the world.
Currently, Dr. Shapiro is the Chief Agricultural Officer of Mars, Incorporated, and is also a Senior Fellow at the University of California, Davis’ (UC Davis) College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Dr. Shapiro has an impressive academic career that spans more than 15 years and involves many designations and appointments. He has also led the global effort in sequencing, assembling and annotating the Theobroma cacao and the Arachis hypogaea genomes, served the World Bank as one of the lead authors of the Mid-Term Review of the Consultative Group on International Agriculture research, and collaborated on cropping systems with the Tata Trust.
He currently serves as an Advisor to the Tropical Landscapes Finance Facility, sits on the Board of the World Wildlife Fund’s Markets Institute, and serves as a consultant to many NGOs.
